Javier Gómez, Alvarez-Tostado
Javier is the Founder of JGAT+studio LLC, an AIA International Associate, and a Registered Architect in Mexico. He holds a professional degree in Architecture from Universidad Anáhuac and completed graduate studies in Architectural Design at the Architectural Association in London, Historic Preservation at both Tulane University and UNAM, as well as Contemporary Arts at the University of California, Berkeley.
Javier served as Director of Design at RoTo Architects (Michael Rotondi), where he led the design of the Madame Tussaud’s Museum and the Boys and Girls Club in Hollywood. As a Design Consultant, he collaborated with Weinstein AU, Brooks + Scarpa, SmithGroup, and SPACE, where he co-designed Torre Efizia, an award-winning 33-story high-rise in Mexico City.
He has taught extensively in the United States, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. His academic appointments include Texas Tech University, where he received both the Best Teacher Award and the Professing Excellence Award, as well as SCI-Arc, the Architectural Association, ArtCenter College of Design, Seattle University–Cornish, Seattle Pacific University, Bellevue College, the University of Colorado, Tulane University, Louisiana State University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Salamanca, Anáhuac, UNAM, and Universidad Iberoamericana.
As an adviser to the Mayor of Mexico City, Javier contributed to the master plan for the historic downtown’s restoration. His expertise and research center on integrating contemporary architecture into historic contexts.
He has served as Commissioner for the XVII Triennale di Milano, participated in the Ecopolis Project of the International Academy of Architecture in Bulgaria, and is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the International Academy of Architecture, the Architectural Association, SPACE-City, the Sociedad de Arquitectos Restauradores de México, the National Academy of History (Fellow), and is President of International Affairs for both SMI and CIDI (Mexican Society of Interior Design).
Javier has authored more than 40 articles and papers published in three languages. He has lectured internationally at institutions including Canning House in London, the University of Rabat, the Royal Dutch Institute of Architecture, the American Institute of Architects, the Colegio de Arquitectos de México, the University of Seville, the Denver Art Museum, Chiba University in Tokyo, and the San Francisco MoMA.
He is passionate about travel, classical music, and contemporary arts.
